Compassion is seeing the hurt or suffering in someone else and feeling the need to rid them of the pain. Christ had compassion on many that he came across. His eyes saw the innermost need along with the need on the outside. It was probably very overwhelming to look out upon a large number, see the pain and suffering in their eyes and feel that need to heal them. Because of His wonderous love so many were and are healed.

As a Christian, you need to have compassion towards others in order to make a difference in their lives. You need to look upon the outside as well as the inside of a person and realize that you have the ability to make a difference if you will have compassion. In 1 Peter 3:8 - Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: We see here if we are born again, we must have compassion on those around us. We need to be an example of what indwells us. The best mirror of what we are filled with is actions we show towards others. If we are sneering, pushing away, turning our nose up and the like, you are filled with yourself. Being self centered is what causes us to turn away from those that desperately need help.

We also need to take the focus off of our own problems. Sometimes we just continually dwell on “oh poor me” and neglect the opportunity to help someone else. You can use a rough time in your life to be an encouragement to someone else going through a similar circumstance. Have you ever been in a place where someone was grieving and you thought to yourself, “I wish I knew how to comfort this person?” Not long afterwards you find yourself in that person’s shoes. You end up feeling the pain of their suffering but you are left with a decision. Are you going to let the circumstance take you over and wallow in self pity, or are you going to determine to overcome it and learn how to make it a blessing in someone else’s life? You never know what God is going to put in your life that at the time seems tragic and cruel but down the road could end up being the very thing that helps someone else out of the same situation and encouraging their heart.

Take your trials in your life, use them as a means of learning compassion. When you hurt, you want someone to come up along side you and lift you up out of the pit of despair. Be that strong one for someone else. James 1: 2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Take your trials, count them as blessings, knowing that it isn’t in vain and that you have a mission. Your mission is to find that soul that needs your compassion through the wisdom that was instilled in you through your darkest hours.
