Why I am no longer a Republican

I, myself, have given up hope on the Republican Party. I know many people who vote for Republican candidates because of, what I call the 'Fear Factor'. A good friend with who I have had some lively discussions just e-mailed me and I quote from him, "...I'll have to go with the best choice for me, my family, and this country. I don't see the Republicans as a
lesser of two evils. Sure they could do way more than what has been done, but I just can't let someone who will hurt us win by default.
" That is what I am talking about when I say the "Fear Factor", not some silly television show. Another example was in the local newspaper just the other day. This woman wrote in saying, "This letter is directed to my fellow Republican voters who, for one reason or another, have become disenchanted with some of our members in Congress and may be toying with the idea of not voting on Nov. 7. Just say these words out loud to yourself: 'Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi'...".

I used to be a staunch Republican. I almost said conservative, but that would be wrong, because I still consider myself conservative. I just do not consider myself Republican, because they are no more conservative anymore than the Democrats are. Under the Republicans our government continues to grow at a pace that cannot be considered fiscally conservative.

The Republicans favor big business and cater to the special interest groups and lobbyists hired by big business, the whole time sacrificing the middle class so big business can make a profit. A fine example of this is illegal immigration. If businesses did not need these low wage earners, and really cared about hiring American workers the Republicans would have put a fence up between Mexico and the U.S. a decade ago. However since businesses hire these workers for dirt, which undercuts American workers salaries, the Republicans speak a good game, but actions speak louder than words. By their actions alone, they could care less about stopping illegal immigration, even if by doing so they violate their constitutional obligations to protect us from invasion. With over 20 million illegals in this country now, with a cost of over $397 billion in social services for these immigrants, do you honestly think the Republicans care about you or your best interests?

Another area, that is a touchy subject for many, is the subject of terrorism and homeland security. Under President Bush we have seen the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, talk of a real ID card and who knows what else he will come up with in his last two years in office? I know we need to protect our nation from terrorists, but to violate the Bill of Rights with the Patriot and Military Commissions Acts is just wrong, and we sit by and let it happen. If we want to protect our country we should seal the border, stop issuing visas for anyone from a country that sponsors terrorism, round up and deport all those on expired visas from the abovementioned countries, and deport any Muslim cleric who preaches hatred towards this country within our borders. The legislation passed under a Republican President and Congress shows a blatant disregard for the Constitution and the rights of law abiding American citizens.

The how about the rumors of a North American Union? With NAFTA and GATT as the first steps towards this union of the 3 countries we are well on our way to losing our sovereignty as a nation. How can our Congress, both Democrat and Republican allow this to happen without their approval of any treaty as the Constitution says they should give? Either the Republicans are blind and do not see this happening, or they are part and privy to it and could care less. You decide, but do a web search for Building a North American Union by the Counsel on Foreign Relations to find out what their goal really is.

I am not saying the Democrats are any better, in fact they are probably worse. That does not justify the move towards a fascist state that the Republican leadership has led us. There is an alternative, the Constitution Party or even the American Independent Party has a platform that pays heed to government as our founding fathers desired, with the emphasis on states rights, and a balance of power in which the 3 branches of government provide checks and balances to protect the rights of the people. It is up to us to have the courage to put enough third party candidates into office so that the other two parties cannot lead us to a fascist Republican state or a communist Democratic union. So what about it? Do you still love America and American values, or are you satisfied with the status quo?

About the Author

Just a guy who loves his country, but not what it is becoming; full of apathetic people who would rather watch television than pay attention to how our Constitution is being defiled by those sworn to uphold it.

I have checked out Constitution Party and they seem a little too close to the edge as far as theocracy is concerned. I prefer the Libertarian Party. This from a man who has considered himself a moderate Democrat.

What is needed is a 2 day sick out.. Just like the illegal aliens did to show what their walk out would do to the economy. (Nothing really happened, it's effect was not noticeable) But if all citizens of this great land called in sick on the same days nation wide to show elected officials solidarity against the open border policies illegally supported by the current administration would drive home to the government and cooperate America the anger felt by Citizens... This sick out would shut down our economy for 2 days..

I am a Republican and support President Bush. However, I admit that politics have drifted far from where our forefathers ever intended for them to go. I am considering the Constitution Party but I don't want to weaken the Republicans. I guess I have some soul-searcing to do.
