Article 12-26-07 Politics, Politics, Politics!
Well it started months ago but is about to go into full swing. I'm talking about Election '08. It seems every election, the ads start earlier, the attacks get more severe, and the interest gets less each year.
What is a Christian to do? Where do we turn to get our information to make the right choices this upcoming year? Well there are a couple of things I want to say. I believe personally that Election '08 is possibly the most important election in my life time. And the sad truth is, even with all the importance that we place upon it, our choices are probably some of the worse that we have had in my life time.
For we Christians, there are the issues of life (Abortion), taxes and financial responsibility, morality in leadership, the Iraqi War as well as the War on Terror, just to name a few. Whether you are Democrat or Republican, the candidates are all over the map on the issues. Some hold to our conservative viewpoint now, but just a few years ago, we would not even have considered them. Some hold to such extreme views, it is hard to believe they have any following at all. Some are promoted by celebreties while others stand alone. Some have served in government for many years, while others are newcomers to an elected position.
The Christian community has raised several concerns. One is the Right to Life. Many if not most of the candidates hold to a "right to choose" position. This is not even worthy of my discussion. We clearly understand the Bible position on Abortion. No one but God has the right to choose the life or death of the unborn. Also the issue of Traditional Marriage is a front page item. There again, there is no need to discuss this issue. For most of you, you have a strong stand on the Husband/Wife relationship established by God. The issue of Immigration has been on the minds of many of us for months. I can assure you that I along with most conservatives have no problem with non-Americans seeking a better life and coming to this country to find freedom and liberty. But our fear is with the multitudes that come across for reasons of crime and to do harm and are here illegally. Also the issue of the over burdened social system that provides education, health care, housing, etc. for illegals while our own citizens cannot in many situations get help in their own dilemma.
There are so many issues facing us in this election that sometimes I just say that this will possibly be the first year that I don't even vote. But I know that is not the answer. With little or no choices for me, I just have to wait and trust God that possibly in the next 10 months, a candidate will come to the forefront that speaks the true language of Consevativism and Christianity. I know that we are not the only ones that have to be satisfied, but our choices and decisions are not based upon preferences or desires. Our choices and decisions are based on Bible convictions. We cannot not compromise on some of the issues of life and morality. To do that would be to deny the Faith! But yet there is room for dialogue and reason for tolerence. We have no other choice. Even with our sad choices in '08, at least we still have a choice and a voice. And to me that is the greatest reason for hope.
So when I vote in '08, (and I will!) I will be voting for freedom and liberty. I may have to endure 4 or even 8 years of liberalism and mis-direction, but as long as freedom survives, there will be another election. Now don't think I have given up yet. There is still time and we need to pray for our country. Get involved in the grass roots level. Stay informed on the issues and where the candiates stand. Go to meetings where the candidates discuss their views and where you can ask questions. Research all avenues of information from key conservatives on the web and over the media. Start prayer groups at your church. Ask your Pastor to give you some help in finding the answers you need. Most of all, trust God to do the right thing for us. God is still on the throne and the "heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord." He can turn things around in just a few days and give us a king "who knew Joseph." God Bless America and God bless our Christian brothers to stay informed and stay involved.
