If you believe all the polls that have been taken during this election season, then you believe that the Republicans are going to be soundly defeated in both the House and the Senate. Add to that the Mark Foley page scandal, and other scandals that surfaced throughout the year and you might be saying to yourself “why don't I just sit this election out.” If you have said that to yourself then this article is for you. My response to you is please don't waste your vote. If you absolutely can't vote for a Democrat and you won't vote for a Republican, you still have other options.

Consider voting for a third party candidate. I know that the media only focuses on the two major parties, but it might surprise you to find out that there are several large third parties to choose from. The third largest party is the Constitution Party. You can check to see if there is a candidate running in your area by going to http://www.constitutionparty.com/view_states.php . The Constitution Party is a conservative party that believes in restoring American government back to its constitutional principles. Actually any conservative Republican who is fed up with their party could easily cast a vote for a Constitution Party candidate. If you take a gander at their Party Platform you can see why that would be true.

The next largest party is the Libertarian Party. This is a party that holds freedom and personal responsibility in high regard. They don't believe in big government, and they don't believe government should be dictating how the American people should be living their lives. You may have heard of their 2004 Presidential candidate Michael Badnarik. The Republicans and Democrats were successful at keeping him out of the debates and he was arrested in St. Louis trying to enter the building where the debate between President Bush and John Kerry was set to be televised. You can see their website at http://www.lp.org

If neither one of these parties suits your political taste you can look toward the Green Party or perhaps Ralph Nader. Just don't fall into the trap of thinking that the only choice you have is voting for a Democrat or a Republican.

Now if you are a Republican and live in a consistently blue state like Connecticut, where the Republican candidate for Senate is polling very low and the Republican Party elite from the Governor on down refuses to endorse him. You can still cast a vote that will count by voting for one of the third party candidates. A vote for a third party candidates in this situation will help them gain or keep ballot access for the next election. Not only that, but when the two major parties see that third parties are gaining popularity, they start to get nervous about losing their grip on power. This usually causes them to pay close attention to what the American people are saying.

Its a fact that third party candidates drive issues. Was any one concerned about the national debt before Ross Perot made it and issue when he ran for President? Not many if there was anybody at all. But during that election the national debt became a major focus for all the candidates involved. Thats the kind of power third parties can hold in politics today, if you would give them your support. They seek to hold the two major parties accountable, but they can't do it with out your help.

The only way that you can truly waste your vote is to stay home on election day. Many of our countrymen that have gone before us paid the ultimate price so you and I can have a voice in the way which we are governed. Please don't let them down by staying home in November.

Don't waste your vote!

Very good advice. I am not familar with Constitution Party, but will be voting for every Libertarian that I can in Georgia. I have not been able to bring myself to vote Republican since the days of "Tricky Dicky" and am totally disillusioned by the Dems. We need to vote for candidates that will return to small government principles.

You should also take a close look at state and local candidates. They can also expand their fiefdoms at our expense.
