"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the people's liberty teeth keystone... the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable... more than 99% of them by their silence indicate that they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference. When firearms go, all goes, we need them every hour."
George Washington (Address to 1st session of Congress)
I believe the writers of the the 2nd Amendment knew exactly what they wrote. They knew
from European history that a Repressive Governments first goal would be to disarm the populous. Knowing that they wrote the 2nd Amendment to curb any excuse by government that having a military, police agency or any other government entity is no excuse for disarming citizens.
"A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."
The interpretations of the 2nd amendment is argued. To me it says:
( A Governments [states] need to have an Army to protect its people does not take away the right of the people themselves to be armed.)
My true feeling is that this is what the forefathers were saying. I can not see our forefathers NOT wanting to establish the right of gun ownership for self protection and for the ability of the population to restore a representative government if need be. Especially in the fact that most immigrants fled Europe to get away from repressive governmental control.
Today the Supreme Court will hear arguments as to the intent and meaning of whether the 2nd Amendment is a States right to an armed Militia or an individuals right to bear arms for self protection of life and property in spite of a States Armed Militia.
If it is found that individuals have never had a right to bear arms, then this Country is no longer free. Like the ability to read opens doors into all aspects of knowledge, the right to bear arms leads to all aspects of true freedom and security. And as true today as when spoken, George Washington's prediction "~ When firearms go, all goes ~" will be the consequence.
If it is held that Bearing Arms is a RIGHT then that is what it is. Any attempts to regulate, tax, license an individuals ownership of a gun would be an infringement. It is a right as is free speech and not a privilege to be sold, rented out by a governmental agency.

This is a battle for the very foundation of our freedoms, Rule of law and the gun protect individual freedoms, Just laws govern our dealings with each other and the government we allow to rule over us. Guns protect us from individuals that will not conform to Law and from a Repressive Government with unjust laws. Our forefathers were not dumb, they knew the history of Europe and knew that sooner or later our own government may try to disarm citizens. So they essentially say in the 2nd amendment. Having a militia to protect the state is no excuse to disarm the public....

My hopes are that the Supreme Court rules that the RIGHT to own and use firearms is an individuals. Which I hope would lead to a melt down of a lot of liberal laws trying to infringe on this RIGHT as if it were a privilege to be earned.
