1st Timothy, 2nd Timothy, and Titus are matched up from the Apostle Paul to instruct us on leadership of churches. Timothy was a young man, so Paul wrote in 1st Timothy giving an outline in the ministry, instructing in the ability to run an effective church. 1st Timothy is about how the you should set up a church. 2nd Timothy is written to a middle-aged Timothy. Now you know what leadership is like in the church, be steadfast, be persuaded and have assurance because you know. Hold fast. Paul is saying, Hold Fast! Don't slip, don't fall, don't start moving away, don't get tired of fighting, don't get liberal on me. Teenagers test us to see if we believe what we profess; when we get older-we begin to cave in-hold fast; don't let it slip! Flee youthful lusts. Do you have a Corvette? Then, you must be 50 years old. It's the middle age thing. Don't get a toupee! Having a midlife crisis? Needing a new job? A new wife? Flee youthful lusts! Titus is also about leadership.
1 Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine
1 Timothy 1:5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned.
We are to preach sound doctrine. We are to know church doctrine. We are to have sound faith. We need to know church discipline. Only Jesus Christ=doctrine. Pure doctrine. How do we get saved? Pure doctrine. Don't add to the Word of God. There's this prayer meeting where they get together and gossip and pray about the church members. I'm sorry I'm not getting yoked with that. That's crazy stuff. A faithful ministry is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Sound doctrine. Pure worship. Preaching the grace of God. Deacon-you can't be a deacon if you don't believe in soul-winning. Just read the New Testament-Philip was witnessing everywhere. Paul went soul-winning anyway even though God told him not to. Sound doctrine.
1 Timothy 3:A GOOD WORK
1 Timothy 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. (Forget the notion that you are not good enough, or you're not qualified, if you desire to be in ministry, you are a desiring a GOOD WORK.)
A deacon these days is a glorified position. But, let me tell you the oppposite, a deacon is not a lifted up position. A deacon is not wanting to be great, it is wanting to lift up others. There are many bishops who have lifted up titles. No, it's about lifting others up. "I desire to lift up other people." Instead, we have deacons who run off the preachers. I want the deacons to hand out these groceries. Help people out. A desire to lift others up, to grow, to help carry the burden, and to ask "how is everything/" "We need to help you more." We need to help clean the bathrooms. I want a clean bathroom. "I desire to help care for my preacher and this church." Back then, church was under extreme persecution. When you wanted to be deacon, you were saying, "I want persecution." I'm not talking about getting made fun of, and mocking, the church was under severe persecution. They were taken and burned, thrown into lions' dens. When they signed the Declaration of Independence, they were asking for persecution...
I desire to be a deacon. You are going to be persecuted. Most christians run away from persecution.
I'll do it. Who's going to lead? Who's going to stand? Who's going to help? I'll do it.
A good work. A good work. You desire a good work. Good!
2)Good behavior. 1 Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
Blameless. Vigilant. Sober. of good behavior. Apt to teach, good work=good behavior. Good work=known for good behavior. Good behavior-if you're good, you'll do good things. Bad people do bad things; it's just that simple. Good work-> good behavior. Your testimony is what you are. Have you been black-balled? People know who you are.
1 Timothy 3:3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
Good work. Good work. Good behavior. Faithful. Do your best.
Do a good work and let time tell. A good work-good behavior.
He shouldn't be a novice. Genesis 3:6 Not a novice, lest being filled with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
Good Work. Good behavior. Good report.
It took 4 years to get a good report. What do your neighbors think of you? What do the waitresses think? How do you act at Walmart? A good report.
1 Timothy 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
"Oh it says not much wine. Ok, go to the drug store, and get your dimetapp. It has enough wine for your cold."
Let the office of a deacon be found blameless. Sober.
Good Degree-known for the years that you stand by your faith.
Qualified? Not qualified?- It doesn't matter-your desire to be in ministry is a GOOD WORK. The desire is GOOD.
good behavior->good report
->good degree
When you've lived it long enough, you can be bold, not worried, good work. I've been here. I've here to stay. Good work. I'm going to be faithful.
1 Corinthians 10:12-13Wherefore let him that thinketh he standth take heed lest he fall. 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape that ye may be able to bear it.
I'm not worried about a title. Nor a position. "Just want to be a servant." This man is a great man! Keep a good heart about it and be willing with what God wants you to go about.
