Genesis 22 is about the offering of Isaac. 1And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
(some say that it is because he said, here "I am" that he was getting tempted. later on, he changes the order and says Here am I.)
James 1:15 says, Let no many say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.
Hebrews 11:17 says, By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
When Genesis 22:1 talks of "God did tempt Abraham" we can see from James 1:15 and Hebrews 11:17 that the word tempt means "tried, or proved."
Genesis 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
"God didn't want Isaac, God wanted Abraham's heart. He didn't want a human sacrifice, he wanted Abraham's living sacrifice."
Genesis 22:3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
Abraham, surrendered to God, did as he was told. Some say the wood is reminiscent of Jesus and the cross that he had to carry before his Calvary.
4Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. (So, even though Abraham knew that God required him as a sacrifice, he still had the faith to say, I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. He knew God was going to do something miraculous. "We'll be back!")
6And Abraham took the wood of the burn offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7And Isaac spake unto Abraahm his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
"God will provide himself a lamb- John1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." God will provide himself... 1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh... Abraham had tremendous words of faith!
9And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10And Abrahm stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11And the angel ofthe LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
"Instead of Isaac, the ram. Instead of you, the ram! Instead of you, the Lamb!"
14And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
(The mount of the LORD-Moriah- is Calvary.)
Key verses in this passage for today are : Genesis 22:5 when Abraham says, "I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you." and Genesis 22:8 when he says, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering:"
