The Story of St. Valentinus: More than Cards and Candied Hearts by The Voice of the Martyrs with Cheryl Odden is about the true meaning of Valentine's Day. We celebrate Valentine's Day with candies, flowers, and hearts. Around 200 years after the birth of Jesus, at the time of the Roman Empire, Emperor Claudius was in charge. He was characterized as a mean and harsh ruler. When he wanted more soldiers to fight in wars, and men did not volunteer, he made a law against marriages.
As a church leader, Valentinus thought this was against the law of God. "Marriage was God's idea, and no emperor can hinder what God created!" (11) He secretely married couples in the woods, so that they could marry and have families.
As a result, Valentinus was arrested. Valentinus took the time to testify of Jesus Christ to Claudius. He also testified to Marcus the prisoner guard who had a blind daughter. She was healed of her blindness sometime that night or morning, and Marcus chose to believe in Jesus as his Saviour.
Unfortunately, Valentinus had to pay with his life for refusting to worship the false Roman gods, and for going against Claudius' outrageous law preventing people to marry in order to have the men fight in wars. He was killed on February 14, 269.
Let's remember that Valentine's Day is indeed a time to remember love, God's true love, that he sent the Saviour into the world so that we could experience true love, abundant life, through the Messiah, the Saviour, Yeshua Hamasheach, Jesus Christ.
