Jesus replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.' " So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
{Matthew 26 18-19}

One of the biggest mistakes we have made as Christians is to forget our Jewish heritage. One of the easiest ways to remember it is to celebrate Easter on the correct date just as Jesus did when he celebrated the Passover before his death burial and resurrection.

Historically the Easter date was moved to separate us from our Jewish ancestors.

The recent Popes have spoken about our mistakes to our Jewish brothers. However one of the greatest mistakes we have made as CHRISTIANS and CATHOLICS is not to recognize our Jewish roots.  Christianity and Catholicism are a rooted  in the old testament. Historically Pasqua (Easter) was celebrated on the Passover. This makes sense since Our Lord Jesus Christ was celebrating Passover before his crucifixtion. However the early church in order to be be different and disassociate with Judaism decided to use the Gregorian calendar.

Easter is the festival commemorating the resurrection of Christ, observed in the Christian churches today. By the first Christian, it was considered to continue the feast of the Passover, at which the paschal lamb, a symbol of Christ, was sacrificed. Hence, its name in Greek, French,and other Roman languages is taken from Hebrew "Pesach" = Passover. The English name comes from the Anglo-Saxon "Eastre" - a goddess of light or spring, whose festival was celebrated in April. (http://www.entourages.com/barbs/easterfacts.htm)

Scholars, accepting the derivation proposed by the 8th-century English scholar St. Bede, believe the name Easter is thought to come from the Scandinavian "Ostra" and the Teutonic "Ostern" or "Eastre," both Goddesses of mythology signifying spring and fertility whose festival was celebrated on the day of the vernal equinox

Traditions associated with the festival survive in the Easter rabbit, a symbol of fertility, and in colored easter eggs, originally painted with bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring, and used in Easter-egg rolling contests or given as gifts (http://www.holidays.net/easter/story.htm)

So let us worship the Lord {The father of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob} Celebrate Passover and Easter as one Holy Day & not the Easter bunny !

Don't forget, the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates Easter (Pascha) the same time or just after Passover. This true Church does not separate itself from the Jewish calendar. You cannot have Christianity without the Jews or without Passover because Passover is what brought Jesus to Jerusalem. And we all know what happened in the days to follow. So please be careful when putting all Christians into the same category. The Orthodox faith remains true to the heritage and it's history, unlike Catholicism and all other churches which spun off there. If they all trace their roots, they come from Orthodoxy! Christos Anesti!
