Has anybody ever heard of the Log Cabin Republicans? They are a grassroots group of GLBT Republicans that believe that they represent the historical "core principles" of the party.
"We believe equality for gay and lesbian people is in the finest tradition of the Republican Party." (www.logcabin.org 4/25/07) Really? The group also believes that "Looking ahead to 2008, the Republican Party must return to its core principles and offer a hopeful and optimistic big tent vision that unites voters around a common vision." It seems that the Republican party is making their best effort to expand that tent. It is obvious that the Republicans are heavily courting the latino vote with their efforts to undermine United States citizens by allowing unchecked illegal immigration from our southern border. The President has paid lip-service to border security, but the reality is...nothing has changed. There are many underlying reasons for President Bush's border betrayal but that is another article altogether. (You can go to http://www.jbs.org/node/933 for a well documented resource page on the North American Union)
In addition to the homosexual crowd, and the pro-illegal immigrant crowd, the Republicans are also reaching out in a big way to the big government crowd. The party, having been hijacked by the "neo-conservative" activists, has allowed the biggest increase in domestic spending in decades. Instead of reducing federal government intrusion in education, President Bush and his Republican allies passed "No Child Left Behind" legislation. Instead of reducing the amount of unconstitutional spending on welfare, medicare, prescription drugs, etc... the government has presided in the creation of a new, kinder, gentler Republican party that favors big government over personal responsibility. The effort to expand the tent is growing daily.
There is, however, one group that is being forced out from under the tent...the pro-life Republican. The 1980 Republican platform included the following regarding abortion: "we affirm our support of a constitutional amendment to restore protection of the right to life for unborn children." (http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/showplatforms.php?platindex=R1980, 4/25/2007) The 2004 platform also contains a similar thought. It is obvious that the pro-life "plank" has become nothing more than lip service to the "God vote". With four years of a Republican controlled congress alongside a supposedly pro-life President, we now see that absolutely nothing has changed. There has been no passioned debate for life, only a shallow effort to eliminate "partial-birth abortion". The net result will be no lives saved through the upholding of this bill by the US Supreme Court. If the Republican party were actually serious about the evil of abortion, it would be the leading cause of the party. That is absolutely not the case. If a committed Republican truly believes that abortion is murder, the lack of progress made in the last 6 years should make them sick. The fact that there are groups like the "Republican Majority for Choice" should make all pro-lifers seethe with righteous anger. The truth is that the Republican party is no longer a viable choice for the truly pro-life voter. Are there still pro-life Republicans that are worthy of your vote? Yes. Ron Paul of Texas is running for President in 2008. (www.ronpaul2008.com) With Ron Paul you get the complete conservative package. Paul, a medical doctor, is absolutely pro-life and pro-constitution. There are other pro-lifers among Republican presidential hopefuls, but the polls show that Rudy Guliani is near the top, along with John McCain (who has serious difficulty retaining any position on the life plank).
The Republican party is closing the tent to the pro-lifers that used to be at the center. There is simply no room for this "inconvient" group of voters. For any pro-life conservative Christian, there are options. There is the Constitution Party (www.constitutionparty.com), or the American Heritage Party (www.americanheritageparty.org). What a shame that the Republican party has caved in. There is no more room under the tent for pro-lifers (like me).
